Superintendent's Note

And just like that, it's a new year and a new semester!

The school year has been humming along with seasonal delights like the winter concert series by our talented students and music teachers, and curricular milestones achieved by hard work and diligence in the classroom. You can find so many wonderful examples of these programs and activities over the first semester of school on our YouTube channel, or by keeping up with us on our social media sites

Our schools are integral to the fabric of the community--in a very tangible way, residents have seen the the district's commitment to providing exceptional learning environments through the building of all new schools in Elyria. The school construction project that's been underway since 2016 has now come to a close. Our focus remains on the long-term health and growth of our school district and community.

Earlier this year we embarked on a strategic planning process to engage internal and external stakeholders in conversations about the present and future of Elyria Schools. The process was led by Burges & Burges Strategists of Cleveland. Of this endeavor, four primary goals were born.

Goal 1: We will collectively reinforce high-quality expectations for all students.

Goal 2: We will work collaboratively with our community to reduce educational barriers for students and families.

Goal 3: We will focus our resources to meet the priorities of our students, families and community stakeholders.

Goal 4: We will enhance community outreach to broaden our community audience and strengthen Elyria traditions.

You can read more on this here.

A key aspect of success is financial stability. On March 19, the district will have two renewal levies on the ballot, Issues 21 and 22, that account for more than 20 percent of the district's operating budget. These funds are used for day-to-day expenses such salaries, utilities, transportation and other general services for our schools. The issues are renewals that will not increase taxes.

The district has continuously earned the Auditor of State Distinction for excellent financial management, and has not requested new money for operating expenses in 14 years. This again is not a request for new money: Issues 21 and 22 on March 19 are renewals to maintain what we already have.

The success of our schools and community extends well beyond the classroom, and we've established excellent partnerships in our community to provide our students with services that meet the needs of the whole child. Our learning environments, support services, character-building programs like sports and fine arts, and highly trained educators and staff are unmatched.

It's always a great day to be a Pioneer and it's our privilege to serve the students and families of Elyria. We love this journey we're on with you! Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if we can help along the way. GO PIONEERS!
