Welcome back!
As we welcome our students back to school, I wanted to take a moment to welcome you -- our families -- back for a new year, as well. The start of a new school year is always an exciting time. The buildings are active places in the summer as we prepare for students' return but there's nothing like the activity and excitement that comes from seeing our buildings bustling as staff and students return.
While every new year feels like a fresh start, last year was a challenging one for Elyria Schools. We faced significant financial hurdles after failing two levy attempts for operating expenses. As a result, the board approved a $9-million reduction plan, which included reductions in services, programming and in staffing. Many of our staff members are experiencing changes this year -- changes in assignments, buildings, hours and responsibilities.
We're grateful to have been able to recall many staff who were impacted through attrition and vacancies, but we know that this process has not been easy for anyone.
I want to thank our staff for continuing through it all to show up -- mind, body and spirit -- for our students. I also want to thank our parents/guardians and families for your patience as we navigate these changes. We know that many families have been impacted directly in these reductions, and we are here to assist you.
Despite all the changes and challenges, the new school year is upon us and there is a lot to be excited about.
Our custodial and maintenance crews worked all summer long to ensure the buildings are cleaned and ready to go for students' arrival. Please join me in thanking them for their hard work.
We have long history here in Elyria of pulling together when and where it matters most and our staff is ready to give your students a great year!
Thank you, and... we look forward to seeing you, Pioneers!
Sincerely,
Superintendent Ann Schloss
It's always a great day to BE A PIONEER!
